What is a dental implant?
DENTAL IMPLANTS can be an effective way to restore lost teeth; they provide a durable, permanent option for oral reconstruction. They can offer many benefits:
Dental Implant Procedure
Dental implants are often considered to be the most functional and durable solution for missing teeth.
It is an artificial root substitute made mostly of titanium, a material that fuses to bone through a biologic process known as “osseointegration.”
First, the implant is surgically inserted into your jawbone (most commonly by an oral surgeon or periodontist) to serve as an anchor. The second phase is the placement of a cement-retained or screw-retained implant crown.
What are the components of a dental implant crown?
The implant crown is made up of 2 components: the abutment and the crown. The abutment is the connector, placed on, or built into, the top of the dental implant crown to connect the implant to the replacement tooth. We would take an impression to send to a lab (as we would with a crown on a natural tooth). The replacement tooth (crown) is then made over the posts or attachments (abutment). The entire procedure usually takes six to eight months.
Like with any restoration, implants require diligent oral hygiene and proper care to ensure their longevity.
